The last major step is being performed as I write, as our ugly flooring is being ripped out and replaced with pretty flooring.We'd already seen one layer of linoleum underneath the kitchen tile when we had the stove replaced early in our tenure here at 406, but we saw two more samples that I'm glad we never had to lay eyes on before. It's hard to believe any of this stuff was ever attractive.
They got here at 8:45 this morning, and other than an afternoon break to dump trash and pick up something for the stairs, they've been at it ever since. It's after 8 p.m. here in the East and we can only hope we can get to bed sometime soon.
It's butterscotch oak flooring, for those who have been asking. It's encompassing the entrance landing, kitchen, living room and hallway back to the bedrooms. The stairs are getting replacement carpet, not hardwood, since that's knocking hundreds of dollars off the cost.It's the low bid but the floors look good. That's all that matters.
Robert has been trying to help all afternoon. Thankfully they are not charging us extra for the experience!

We did get wood stairs, on the way up anyway, and there will be new carpet on the way down. But the stairs needed to be stained to match, of course ... and they're not dry.
Colleen and Robert are sleeping in the one downstairs bed. (Thankfully we still have a bed downstairs!) Once they were asleep, I gave Elizabeth a boost up over the railing to sleep on the couch upstairs. I can get up the stairs by walking on the railing. (No, seriously, that's how I did it.) That was necessary to get the kids something to eat before bed and augment the pillow and pajama situation.
Elizabeth can't get downstairs so she just called me on my cellphone for advice on where to put her trash. (Grocery bag, left in the sink.)
When Cate gets home we'll see what the situation is. I think I'll be able to put the little ones in their own beds with Cate handing them over the railing to me. We'll see how dry it is and whether Cate can get up the stairs.
See, we don't know quite how long it'll take to dry, since the guy who stained them gave me two different answers. I should've asked him for clarification in Spanish.
But then you would have tipped your hand that you knew what they were talking about all day, even if it wasn't very interesting at 10 A.M.
Already did that around noon -- commented on how ugly some of the linoleum was that had been removed. :)

I bought E and C matching dresses today and Robert a new shirt that does not match the dresses!
I recognize the beige faux mosaic vinyl from the 1870s. Ours was green, but the pattern was the same. Congrats on getting the last major hurdle completed!
That picture of Robert is too cute! I bet he had a great time "helping" to put down the new flooring.

Donna, can you stand it? You will soon have all the grandchildren in one place to hug and spoil to your hearts content. MN is going to be one hapy place!
